galaxy view.

A cross between a 'tower defence' type game, and a bot construction game.

Construction of steam powered machines. They are powered by steam, so need coal.
Each map that you go through you get to add to your bot. Adding a gun to it. Making it bigger, faster engine, more efficient engine, armour. etc.

You can also play as a map overlord from the web page, and in game. Where you can add resources to the map. Like you can put in cannons which are steam powered. You place coal around the map, so that cannons can be used. You can place walls.

To AI, or not to AI? The bots could be controlled by AI, or controlled by humans. AI might be hard to make it work right. Playing as a human might be more fun... or not.

some more ideas here -- some ideas for robot parts and various challenges the robot may face during the game ...
(20:52:21) philhassey: hmmn... i bet we could do something in the sokoban
vein of gameplay ...
(20:52:30) philhassey: with some rules like
(20:52:47) philhassey: - the player can only carry 1 robot part at a time
(20:52:55) philhassey: - the player can drop / pickup a part anywhere
(20:53:15) philhassey: - the player can install / uninstall a part in the
robot when he is next to the robot
(20:53:26) philhassey: - while a part is in the robot it will be operative
(20:54:26) philhassey: some questions come to mind
(20:54:46) philhassey: - over head vs isometric vs hex vs ???
(20:55:16) philhassey: - what kind of "world" is this game set on -- how can
 we make it visually appealing
(20:55:26) philhassey: - what kind of atmosphere / effects / sounds
(20:56:04) philhassey: - what rewards will the player get -- i think having
at least one new and interesting part per level could be a rewarding factor
(20:56:22) philhassey: - other rewards : robot being able to impact the
envinronment via destruction activities or building activities
(20:56:43) philhassey: - what is the end goal anyway?
(20:56:59) philhassey: - what other characters are in the game other than
the player and the robot? or is that sufficient ...
(20:57:08) illume: back
(20:57:10) philhassey: - i suspect with the canon, you'll want to be able
to interact with or against something :)

Different focuses and objects of the game: Fighting: Bounty hunter. Collect coal and water throughout the level while tracking down the bad guy and defeating him. When you beat him, you take his superior weapon and also get the bounty to buy and tack on an enhancement. Pest control: basically the same but add some silly twists and goofy insectoids.

Mining: Find deposits of resources (gold, oil, wood, etc), collect them for your colony, increasing its wealth and your wealth, but increasing population and need. Upgrades allow bigger harvest. Perhaps multiple bots? Goal would be to have a large (perhaps targeted level) population.

Interplanetary Colonization: Similar to mining, but the goal would be to enter a hostile environment with baddies and poor living conditions. Using it's tools and weapons, the bot would clear out the hostile entities and create bubbles of atmosphere where people could live. Once thriving, a colony would develope higher levels of technology for the bot, then send it to another (more hostile) planet to produce another colony. Players could choose which planet to colonize next, picking between better begining atmosphere and resources but more enemies, or few enemies but bad atmosphere and resources, thus influencing the choice of upgrades and allowing for different stratagies.

Finding Utopia: I think this was the original concept--go from planet to planet, upgrading your bot on each one and overcoming the obsticals until you reach the ultimate planet.
